Skydrol

Skydrol is a registered trademark of Solutia. Skydrol products represent the most advanced series of aviation hydraulic fluids available and are recognized by all aircraft manufacturers who set requirements for non-flammable hydraulic fluids. This brand name has been a part of the commercial aviation industry’s drive to achieve safety, reliability and superior performance over the past 60 years.

Skydrol is the most advanced aviation hydraulic fluids based on phosphoric acid esters. They have been used in aircraft systems for many decades, consistently demonstrating superior performance.

The use of Skydrol fluid allows to increase reliability and serviceability of aircraft hydraulic systems, reduce the costs of operators associated with the repair of hydraulic systems and pumps. Skydrol fluid is recognized as the primary hydraulic fluid for aviation and has been approved for use by all aircraft manufacturers, including:

SAE – AS1241;

Boeing Seattle – BMS3-11;

Boeing Long Beach – DMS2014;

Lockheed – LAC C-34-1224;

Airbus Industrie – NSA307110;

British Aerospace – BAC M.333.B;

Bombardier – BAMS 564-003;

COMAC – CMS-OL-103;

Gulfstream – 1159SCH302;

Fokker;

Embraer;

Westwind;

Cessna.

The composition of Skydrol fluids was developed on the basis of the best technologies and effective components. During the entire period of operation of Skydrol fluids there have been no cases of erosion or deposits. As aircraft designs have evolved, Skydrol formulations have changed.

The latest generation of Skydrol fluids has been developed to achieve the highest quality to meet all standards and exceed the requirements of aircraft manufacturers. The main requirements of modern aviation for hydraulic fluids are high thermal stability, low density, erosion resistance, miscibility in all proportions, compatibility with system components and maximum safety for operating personnel. Skydrol provides all of this.

Solutia offers not only the highest quality products, but also special user support programs – MySkydrol and Total Lifecycle Care.

To date, the Skydrol line of hydraulic fluids includes the following products – Skydrol LD-4, Skydrol 500B-4 and Skydrol PE-5.

Manufacturing

Skydrol is a hydraulic fluid formulated with an array of chemical additives dissolved in a non-flammable phosphate ester base. These additives serve a variety of functions such as slowing corrosion, increasing viscosity, and preventing erosion damage to servo valves.

Beginning in 2006, production of Skydrol aviation hydraulic fluids and SkyKleen aviation cleaning solvents began at Solutia’s new state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Anniston, Alabama. Construction of the new facility began in late 2005.

The Anniston plant provides customers with the most advanced technology available. Solutia’s investment in the new facility represents another example of how serious the company is about manufacturing Skydrol products and how Skydrol products themselves contribute to the continued improvement of reliability in aviation applications.

The new Skydrol hydraulic fluids plant is ISO 9001:2000 certified. It is also AS9100 compliant and meets a set of quality assurance requirements for suppliers to the aerospace industry, as certified by the International Aerospace Quality Group (IAQG).

Skydrol LD-4

Skydrol LD-4 hydraulic fluid was first introduced in 1977 and is now the most widely used hydraulic fluid in aviation. At the time of its introduction it was an innovative product that solved the valve erosion and thermal stability problems that were inherent in hydraulic fluids of the time. Its excellent thermal stability under real world conditions gave it a reputation as the gold standard among Type IV fluids. Skydrol LD-4 has low density, excellent thermal stability, and prevents valve erosion and deposit formation.

  • High thermal stability.
  • Provides resistance of hydraulic system components to erosion, corrosion and deposits.
  • Compatible with all materials used in hydraulic systems.
  • Experience of application in the world aviation for more than 35 years.
  • Non-flammable fluid.

Approved by manufacturers: Airbus (except A350), Antonov (An-148, An-158), ATR, Beriev (Be-200), Boeing (except B787), Bombardier, British Aerospace, Cessna, COMAC, Embraer, Fokker, Gulfstream, Ilyushin (Il-86, Il-96), Lockheed, Mitsubishi, Sukhoi (Superjet 100), Tupolev (Tu-204, Tu-214).

Skydrol 500B-4

The Skydrol 500 range of hydraulic fluids has the longest history of any phosphoric acid ester product. The first version, Skydrol 500, was introduced as early as 1952, and continuous improvement of the formula led to the current version, Skydrol 500B-4, introduced in 1977, which contains the same revolutionary valve erosion and deposit preventing additive first used in Skydrol LD-4. Skydrol 500B-4 hydraulic fluid is the safest of all phosphoric acid ester based fluids, it does not cause skin irritation and is the least prone to vaporization, which can cause respiratory irritation in real world applications. This has led to tremendous popularity for use in repair shops and for bench testing.

Minimal tricresyl phosphate content, most suitable for liquid contact applications – often used by manufacturers of pumps, hydraulic units and hydraulic systems.

Provides resistance to erosion, corrosion and fouling of hydraulic system components.

Compatible with all materials used in hydraulic systems.

Experience of application in the world aviation for more than 35 years.

Non-flammable fluid.

Approved by manufacturers: Airbus (except A350 and A380), ATR, Boeing (except B787), Bombardier, British Aerospace, Cessna, Embraer, Fokker, Gulfstream (except G650), Lockheed.
